Prime Minister Sharif and UN Chief Discuss Peace and Diplomacy

Islamabad:Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are crucial for resolving disputes and preventing escalation. This statement was made during his meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who is on an official visit to Pakistan.

According to Radio Pakistan, Prime Minister Sharif praised Guterres for his dedication to the UN Charter, multilateralism, and peaceful dispute resolution. He acknowledged the UN chief's contributions to international peace and security.

During the discussion, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted Pakistan's commitment to promoting dialogue and de-escalation, including its mediation efforts between the US and Iran. He reaffirmed Pakistan's support for an effective and inclusive United Nations, stressing the importance of reforming the UN to address the needs of developing countries while enhancing conflict prevention and peacekeeping efforts.

The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan's dedication to regional peace, particularly concerning the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in line with UN Security Council resolutions. He also mentioned the Indus Waters Treaty, asserting that India's unilateral suspension of the treaty lacks legal justification.

Sharif stressed the importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan for Pakistan, expressing concern over terrorism originating from Afghan territory. He called for concrete measures against terrorist groups in Afghanistan.

The Prime Minister expressed Pakistan's unwavering support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and statehood, advocating for the implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan and UNSC Resolution 2803. He also highlighted the need for more accessible financing for developing countries to foster development and climate resilience.

In response, Secretary-General Guterres commended Pakistan's contributions to the UN and international peace, including its active role in UN peacekeeping and the Security Council. He applauded Pakistan's efforts in promoting dialogue and multilateralism.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif hosted a dinner in honor of the UN Secretary-General and his delegation.
